A California substitute teacher was removed from his elementary school classroom after looking at 'inappropriate images' on his phone in front of students.

One distressed parent said her child told her there 'were naked people on the phone' in full view of the students.

The traumatic incident reportedly left students in tears, according to officials who were informed of the event.

The horrifying behavior occurred sometime before noon last Friday, when a concerned parent called Cameron Elementary, in West Covina, California, demanding to know why her son had called her sobbing.

When the school's principal checked on the young boy, she found 'several students crying' in the classroom, according to a statement from the school's superintendent.

This week, parents, who are upset no arrests have taken place, protested in front of the school

The principal, Sylvia Fullerton, took over the class and ordered the substitute, who has not been named, to leave.

She then tried to calm the upset children before bringing them to the school's on-site Mental Wellness Room.

Stacy Matthews, a mother of one of the students, said: 'The teacher had his back to the kids, so they could see his phone and Adison said that there were naked people on the phone.'

She said that many of the students huddled together in a corner because of how uncomfortable they were with what was going on.

'He wouldn't let them go to the bathroom,' she said of the substitute. Though several of the students eventually left to find help.

The area's superintendent, Emy Flores, told NBCLA that the substitute teacher was immediately removed and an investigation has been opened.

'As soon as we found out, we took immediate action,' she said.

Each parent of a child in the class was notified about what had happened.

Flores, after learning about the incident, immediately alerted district administrators, Child Protective Services and link palsu local law enforcement

Richard Bell, West Covina's police chief urged parents to 'remain calm' and 'trust in the investigative process.'

'We are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members, particularly our children,' he said.

In a statement from Superintendent Amy Flores, she reassured parents that the district was approaching the issue and investigation with the utmost seriousness

On Tuesday morning, some parents gathered to protest in the rain in front of the school because the sub has yet to be arrested.

'When we found out on Saturday that he wasn't arrested, she was scared thinking that he was going to come back and come back to get them for tattling, is how she worded it,' said Matthews.

Chief Bell said: 'We want to reassure the community that the police department is treating these allegations with the utmost seriousness.

'An investigation is currently underway to thoroughly examine the situation and gather all the necessary information.'

Flores said her runs a rigorous and detailed hiring process, 'which also includes more than fingerprints, but a full background with DOJ, as well as drug testing.'

She said everything had come back clean for the teacher in question.
